My personal advice would be to focus on learning the stronger heroes of your favorite factions (Deleb for Inferno, Kragh for stronghold, Helmar for Fortress, Havez for Academy, Ossir for Sylvan, Sinitar for Dungeon, Kaspar and Naadir for Necropolis, Klaus and Vittorio for Haven), the Hero you choose is of greater importance in HoMM5 than any other HoMM game, so it's a big advantage to have a powerful Hero. Also unless you're playing campaign, it might not be worth it to try and get the 'ultimate' ability of your Hero, there's a chance that it will be impossible to get, or you will get it way too late. For more advice it would be good to know your favorite faction, because the game plan and strategy differs quite a lot, I would recommend starting out with Stronghold, Sylvan or Inferno with Deleb as your main Hero, as they're the easiest to play for a beginner. For Stronghold you definitely want to go with Kragh and get the, then take leadership (synergizes with stunning blow and powerful blow). If you're unlucky and are not offered leadership, other good choices are Luck and War Machines (Triple Ballista is very strong).
